Letter from the President
La Fundación MD Anderson Cancer Center España continúa un año más reafirmándose como una institución de referencia en la investigación en cáncer de nuestro país, pero esta vez con una novedad: su clara vocación de reinventarse y de innovar para llegar más y mejor a los pacientes oncológicos. Con este objetivo, en 2017 decidimos poner en marcha el diseño de una nueva web para la Fundación que realmente reflejara esa voluntad de apoyo a la investigación pionera en cáncer y que facilitara la navegación y el acceso a todos los recursos que podemos ofrecer a pacientes y familiares en la Fundación MD Anderson España.

y mejor a los pacientes oncológicos
Un proceso de renovación en el que no nos hemos olvidado de las estructuras básicas que sustentan la Fundación desde el inicio: la Unidad de Apoyo a la Investigación Clínica, el Laboratorio de Investigación Traslacional y el Biobanco. En este 2017, hemos reforzado la interacción entre estas tres estructuras con el objetivo de fortalecerlas y mejorar su eficiencia.
Este año, hemos continuado realizando proyectos de investigación de excelencia y prueba de ello es que hemos estado y estamos implicados en 10 proyectos de investigación traslacional, algo fundamental para el crecimiento y el intercambio de conocimientos entre nuestros profesionales. Asimismo, en investigación clínica hemos continuado con la línea de crecimiento de los últimos años. Actualmente, tenemos un total de 54 ensayos clínicos activos y hemos puesto en marcha otros 26 estudios, seis de los cuales son en fase I, además de tener 67 propuestas pendientes de aprobación para el
MD Anderson Cancer Center Foundation Spain consolidates itself once again as a reference institution in cancer research in our country, but this time with a novelty - a clear vocation to reinvent itself and innovate to better reach more cancer patients. With this aim, in 2017 we decided to launch a newly-designed website for the Foundation that truly reflects a willingness to support pioneering research in cancer and facilitates searching and access to all the resources we can offer patients and their relatives in MD Anderson Foundation Spain.
A renewal process in which we have not forgotten the basic structures that have supported the Foundation from the beginning: the Clinical Research Support Unit, the Translational Research Laboratory and the Biobank. During 2017, we reinforced the interaction between these three structures in order to strengthen and improve their efficiency.
This year, we have continued to carry out research projects of excellence and proof of this is that we have been and are involved in 10 translational research projects, which is fundamental for the growth and exchange of knowledge among our professionals. Likewise, in clinical research we have continued with the line of growth of recent years. We currently have a total of 54 active clinical trials and have launched another 26 studies, six of which are in phase I, in addition to having 67 proposals pending approval for next year. Thanks to this, 128 new patients have participated in Foundation clinical trials and studies.
In addition, we have maintained the scholarships offered for the first time in 2016 for the signing of training contracts aimed at young researchers in clinical and translational oncology. These scholarships are an enormous opportunity as they also include a 9 to 12 month stay at MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston.
In terms of technology, we are very proud to have tools that facilitate our daily professional work while providing benefits in survival and quality of life to our patients. The Molecular Diagnostics Unit, the TOUSS technique, the use of 4D imaging in radiotherapy and radiosurgery of bone metastases are advances that allow us to position ourselves and remain as a reference entity in oncology.
